A man identified as 26-year-old Jonathan Brown was arrested in Georgia by numerous agents following the unlicensed sale of firearms that put guns in the hands of felons. Federal law enforcement and Jersey City Police have been working to cease the flow of guns coming into the city from out-of-state methods and have made an official arrest of the Georgia man.
Brown was arrested by agents working with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for one count of conspiracy to commit the unlicensed sale of firearms to felons. Seven of the guns that Brown sold in Jersey City, New Jersey have since been recovered by agents.
According to the criminal complaint, Hasan Mosby shot a person that was sold to him by Brown in October 2019. These guns have since been recovered and linked to at least three other criminal incidents including a shots-fired on January 19, as well as the arrests of two men both on January 29 and March 30 who had loaded guns sold by Brown.
Brown is allegedly barred from purchasing firearms himself due to felony convictions from the past. He allegedly obtained straw purchasers in Georgia to obtain the guns so that he could then sell the weapons in Jersey City. Authorities were able to link this to evidence of gun sales on Brown’s Instagram social media page.
Brown’s conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Numerous other forces worked the case including the Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation took place due to the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), which was formed in 2018 to combat violent crimes around the Jersey City area. VCI is composed of various parties including the U.S. Attorney’s Office, FBI, ATF, New Jersey State Parole, and numerous other entities.
