A Newark man, identified as 43-year-old Hajkim Samuel, was arrested and charged following the kidnapping and assault of a woman from Montgomery Township.
The charges, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson, include kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.
The incident allegedly occurred on April 9 around 5:42 p.m. The Somerville Police Department initially received a 911 call from a victim who claimed that she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by a man. The victim was identified as an adult female who was interviewed by both the Montgomery Township Police Department and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office.
The victim told police that Samuel forced his way into her residence, where he then held her captive at knifepoint. When he had her at knifepoint, Samuel allegedly sexually assaulted her numerous times. He then forced her to travel to a hotel in Middlesex County and sexually assaulted her there, as well.
The victim was able to find an opportunity to escape, where she called 911 immediately.
Detectives executed a search warrant around 1 a.m. on April 10 at a residence belonging to one of Samuel’s family members in Newark. Samuel was at the residence and was discovered hiding under a bed. He was apprehended without incident.
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Montgomery Township Police Department are still investigating and looking for information regarding the case.
