Luis Mejia, a 39-year-old man living in the Wharton County area of New Jersey is now facing some serious criminal charges after accusations were made against him that include the sexual assault of an underage person. The charges he is facing include sexual assault, child endangerment, and criminal contact, all of which can lead to lengthy prison sentences for those found guilty of such crimes.
The charges against Mejia come from accusations that were made against him by someone who was riding as a passenger inside his vehicle as he was working for a popular rideshare company. Mejia had been working as an independent contractor on a part-time basis for the company when he apparently picked the passenger up in Prospect Park to provide that passenger with a ride.
According to the victim, it was at some point during that ride that occurred between August and September of 2019 that Mejia allegedly assaulted the individual in a sexual manner. Because of the seriousness of the crime and the statements made by the alleged victim, Mejia was arrested and then charged with multiple crimes, many of which are considered felonies for those convicted. The current case involving Mejia is still ongoing as more information needs to be provided on both sides for the prosecution and the defense attorney who will take on the job of representing Mejia and attempting to prove that he is not guilty of these accusations.
Accusations of sexual assault are frightening and can lead to damaged reputation, loss of employment and damage the relationships they have formed with other people. Mejia, who is currently active in the armed services, might be guilty of these alleged crimes or he could be innocent. An investigation into the situation is vital to the case.
The defense attorney who will work with Mejia to represent him and defend him against the accusations made will need to put a lot of effort into researching the event timeline and the details of what apparently happened in the vehicle that day.
The case against Mejia has only just begun. It is now up to the prosecution to provide solid evidence and the defense attorney to attempt to prove that the supposed evidence does not prove that Mejia is guilty of any of the crimes he is believed to have committed. If Mejia knows that he did no wrong, he will need to fight these charges against him to clear his name with assistance from a skilled defense attorney.
