Law enforcement in Burlington County, New Jersey, recently announced the arrest of six people who have been committing crimes around the state. Two of the men are currently awaiting charges following the shooting of a high school senior in December 2021.
Details About the Charges
Prosecutors named the gang as- the Gotti Boy Movement. They believe the gang is made up of a large group of people around Burlington County. As of this month, they believe the gang is guilty of committing more crimes in addition to the shooting. They believe there have been more fatal shootings, racketeering, and fraudulent activity of collecting government relief money.
Local police believe the racketeering dates back to at least 2014. A few members of the gang took shots at a Pemberton Township police officer patrolling Sunbury Village. They believe this was the first of many similar shootings that followed. Thus far, members of the gang are awaiting murder charges, weapons charges, and possession of assault weapon charges.
Some of the proposed murder charges are first-degree, which carries with them the highest consequences, including jail time. The gang members may also receive additional sentences for things like conspiracy to commit murder and gang criminality.
The city has taken a priority to identify more of the gang’s members to stop locals from being injured. The high school senior shot and killed in December was not associated with the gang in any way and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another woman was shot in the leg and a toddler received a bullet graze when shots were fired into his home. Someone has been charged with both shootings.
Throughout the case, some of the defendants have also received additional charges, like witness tampering. One of the defendants proposedly made threatening phone calls while in jail. Other gang members have been charged with crimes of street crime and conspiracy to commit computer criminal activity. Investigators also found numerous PPP applications from the gang. They believe that the gang has collected as much as $125,000 in federal funds. The Burlington County prosecutor is taking a strict approach to pursuing charges in hopes of breaking up the gang efforts.
