Drug Bust Made in New Jersey
Early on Sunday morning, August 4th, a 36-year-old neurosurgeon from New Jersey was arrested en route to work for possession of cocaine. The traffic stop that led to the arrest was initiated because V.P had tinted windows on his vehicle.
During the traffic stop, which occurred on Rutherford Avenue in Lyndhurst, NJ, V.P was being evasive when answering questions posed by the officer about his vehicle’s registration and where he was headed. V.P simply stated that he was hurrying to get to work.
V.P, who lives in Parlin in Middlesex County, works as a neurosurgeon at Mountainside Medical Center. The officer who initiated the traffic stop discovered through a database check that the vehicle’s registration had expired and observed drug paraphernalia in plain view, which led to a search of the car.
During the search, the officer discovered more drug paraphernalia along with two glass vials of cocaine. V.P was taken into custody on charges of possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
V.P was released on multiple summonses pending his date in court. He received summonses for having a vehicle with an expired registration, having drugs in the vehicle, and for improper use of safety glass.
As with all criminal cases, the suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
New Jersey Cocaine Laws and Penalties
Cocaine is illegal in all forms in New Jersey and across the country. It is illegal to use, possess, sell or traffick cocaine. Possession of cocaine is considered a third-degree crime and comes with a $35,000 fine.
If you are faced with a drug possession charge and it is your first offense, you will be given the option to enroll in a drug treatment program through the court. Instead of being sentenced to time in prison, you will be placed on probation, will need to make regular court appearances, and will also need to submit to regular drug tests.
